When Is the Best Time to Visit Cape Cod?
The best time to follow this Cape Cod itinerary is between late spring and early fall, when the weather is mild, the towns are lively, and everything is in full bloom. June through September offers ideal temperatures for beach days, ferry rides, and dining al fresco. If you’re a fan of hydrangeas—those iconic Cape Cod blooms—you’ll want to visit in early to mid-July, when the vibrant blues, purples, and pinks are at their peak. This also coincides with the Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival, a 10-day celebration with garden tours and floral displays. For fewer crowds but still-gorgeous weather, consider June or early September when accommodations are more available and the coastline feels a bit more peaceful.
Where to Stay: Coastal Cuties Across the Cape
First up, let’s talk stays. The Cape has a vibe for everyone, whether you’re looking for chic, cozy, or all-out luxurious.
If you want to be close to ferries and love a walkable downtown, Falmouth is such a vibe. Inn on the Sound is a gorgeous waterfront pick with major Instagram energy, and Frederick William House is a super cute B&B with bikes and total garden-core vibes.
Chatham is your go-to for classic Cape Cod elegance. Think white fences, cozy inns, and flower-lined streets. You’ll love Chatham Bars Inn for full-on luxury (private beach and spa, yes please) or Captain’s House Inn for a romantic, storybook-style stay.
Feeling artsy and love a scene? Head up to Provincetown (aka P-Town!). Lands End Inn is all drama and ocean views, while Crowne Pointe Historic Inn is super walkable to shops and the lively Commercial Street scene.
Day 1: Ferry to Martha’s Vineyard & Island Dreaming
Kick off your Cape Cod itinerary with a breezy morning ferry ride from Woods Hole to Martha’s Vineyard. Once you arrive, you’ve got options: rent a beach cruiser bike, hop in a Jeep, or take the free Vineyard Transit Authority trolley that loops through the island’s cutest towns—yes, it’s free and totally adorable. Perfect for hopping around without the stress of parking.
Start your day in Oak Bluffs, one of the most colorful and lively spots on the island. Stroll through the magical Gingerbread Cottages—they look like something straight out of a storybook—and then make your way to Circuit Avenue for some seriously fun shopping. From beachy boutiques and handmade jewelry to unique island gifts, you’ll definitely leave with a little something (or three). Before you leave town, stop by Donovan’s Reef, a casual outdoor bar, for their legendary Dirty Banana frozen drink, and sip it while watching the harbor come alive with boats, music, and salty breeze.

If you’re feeling brave—or just want that perfect Instagram shot—make a stop at the iconic Jaws Bridge just outside of Oak Bluffs. It’s the famous bridge from the movie Jaws, and jumping off it is a classic island rite of passage (or just fun to watch others do it!).
Once you’ve soaked in the vibes of Oak Bluffs, make your way to Edgartown—think charming cobblestone streets, whitewashed captain’s houses, and a total chic, coastal aesthetic. It’s quieter and more refined, perfect for a relaxing stroll, a boutique browse, or just watching sailboats drift in the harbor.

Catch the ferry back in time for dinner, and end your day with tacos, guac, and a spicy margarita at Añejo Mexican Bistro in Falmouth.
Day 2: Coastal Cruising, Hidden Gems & Lobster Rolls
Wake up and start your day in Mashpee, grabbing breakfast sandwiches and coffee at The Picnic Box. It’s a local fav—super casual, super delicious, and perfect fuel for your scenic adventure day. Order ahead if you’re in a rush, or sit outside for a laid-back morning vibe.

After breakfast, hop in the car and follow the scenic coastal route down to Nobska Lighthouse in Woods Hole. This classic Cape Cod lighthouse is perched on a bluff with stunning views over the Vineyard Sound. It’s the perfect photo op—and honestly, the kind of spot that makes you want to twirl in a sundress with the wind in your hair.

Just a few minutes away is Woods Hole, a charming little village with working harbors, cute shops, and science-y spots like the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (if you’re into that sort of thing!). Take a quick stroll or pop into Pie in the Sky for a pastry or coffee top-up.
Next, drive to The Knob in Falmouth. It’s a short and easy hike (totally doable in sandals) through a beautiful wooded path that opens up to panoramic views of Buzzards Bay. It’s peaceful, photo-worthy, and feels like a secret slice of Cape magic.

After working up a little appetite, it’s time for a true Cape Cod rite of passage: a cold lobster roll from Seafood Shanty in Bourne (not to be confused with the Edgartown one!). This no-frills seafood shack is CASH ONLY, but it’s famous for serving the absolute best cold lobster roll—overflowing with fresh meat and nestled in a soft, buttery bun.

From there, head to the historic town of Sandwich for a little post-lunch stroll. Walk the Sandwich Boardwalk and peek into cute shops. For dinner, treat yourself to a cozy, lively meal at Fishermen’s View—a waterfront restaurant and market that serves fresh-caught seafood with a modern twist. If you’re craving something a little more playful, Pilot House Restaurant & Lounge has a great patio, strong cocktails, and a menu full of Cape favorites with a fun atmosphere. Both are great picks for ending the day with good food and good vibes.
Day 3: Charming Chatham – Coffee, Shopping & Seal Watching
Start your morning in Chatham with a stop at The Chatham Sifter, a fun and cozy coffee shop known for great espresso, fresh pastries, and friendly vibes. It’s the perfect spot to fuel up before a day of exploring.
After your caffeine fix, spend the morning wandering through Chatham’s quaint downtown, filled with charming boutiques, galleries, and gift shops. It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to take your time popping into every shop and maybe picking up a unique Cape Cod treasure or two.
For lunch, head to Chatham Pier Fish Market, a total local favorite for fresh seafood. Grab a lobster roll or fried clams and enjoy watching the fishing boats come in and unload their daily catch. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot some playful seals swimming nearby—such a Cape Cod classic moment!

After lunch, take a leisurely stroll along the streets lined with picture-perfect Cape Cod homes, many decked out with hydrangeas and classic white picket fences. Don’t miss a visit to Chatham Lighthouse Beach, where you can walk along the sandy shore and snap some iconic lighthouse photos to round out your trip.
