A Minimalist Europe Packing Guide

Packing for a long-term trip to Europe can be tricky especially if you are limited on space. Backpacking is by far one of the most minimal packing options because well… it’s just you and your backpack. I am a huge fan of backpacking because it saves on time, hassle, and gives you a new perspective on the key things you really need. I recently traveled through Europe for two months with just one carry-on-sized backpack.

Luggage

Choosing the right type of luggage is a big decision.

Backpack: A carry-on-sized backpack is my favorite way to travel because they are inexpensive, light, efficient, and carries a good amount of stuff. The carry-on size eliminates any waiting time at airports and saves on money.

Carry-on Suitcase: A small rolling suitcase is another great form of luggage for travel but with Europe’s cobblestone streets it can be difficult to roll your suitcase through the city. A hard suitcase shell also adds more weight to your bag.

Checked Suitcase: If you are visiting many different countries in a short period of time, this is the most expensive and difficult type of luggage to travel with. If the extra space is absolutely needed then this is the best option for you!

Packing Cubes: These are a great space saver and organizer for any luggage set up. I highly recommend purchasing the compressible packing cubes to help pack as much stuff as possible.

Day Packs: These are perfect for those all-day activities like scootering around the Greek islands. I absolutely love Tripped Travel Gear’s packable lightweight day packs!

Fanny Pack: I used my fanny pack often, especially on travel days. It allowed easy access to important travel documents, money, cell phone, headphones, etc.

Important Documents & Electronics

ID/Passport: The most important travel document of them all! Purchase a passport cover to keep yours in good shape.

International Drivers License: Get your international driver’s license before heading to Europe. Rental shops will ask for it and if you are renting a scooter you may want to look into getting your motorcycle license as well.

Euros/Credit Cards: I highly recommend exchanging USD for a couple of hundred Euros with your bank before crossing the pond. Europe is very credit card friendly but it is always a good idea to carry the local currency.

Laptop/Chargers: Purchase a VPN to secure your information and be able to work remotely without having to convert European websites every time you browse the web.

Cell Phone: If your cell phone provider does not include a European travel plan, then purchasing an E-Sim Card before leaving the states, is the next best and cheapest option.

Headphones: I highly recommend splurging and purchasing a pair of Apple Airpods. The noise-canceling feature makes a world of difference, especially on those long travel days!

Outlet/Power Converters: Europe uses different outlets and voltage than the USA so you will need converters to charge your electronics and not fry your equipment.

Clothing

Clothes are one of the main packing components for most people. First, I divided items into five categories and choose options that were versatile, light-weight, and my favorites. I packed as much stuff as I THOUGHT would fit, and then edited from there.

Tops & Dresses: For tops, I stuck with some casual items for long travel days. I added a few dressy tops for dinner out and touring the charming cities of Europe. A few sweaters and tank tops mixed throughout for those cooler and sunny days in the Fall season. I suggest packing two dresses, one casual and one dressy.

Bottoms: I went simple on the bottoms with two pairs of jean shorts, for days on the beach and touring around the warmer countries. Two basic pairs of jeans (black and denim) that went with almost every top were added to the suitcase. With all of the delicious food, I knew I would want to work out so I packed my favorite gym outfits with a mix of leggings and shorts.

Outerwear: If you are traveling in the fall or spring it is important to bring a rain jacket. I prefer a rain jacket over an umbrella because it is easy to pack, lightweight, and can double as a wind blocker for those boat rides and scooter tours. Some of the countries can get quite cold in the Fall and Spring, so one jacket was very needed!

Shoes: I kept shoes simple because take up so much space. I stuck to three of my favorites – sandals, small boots, and walking shoes. Good walking shoes are very important because you will walk a lot when touring the many cities.

Accessories: Don’t forget those few accessories that tie your outfits together! Belts, your favorite pieces of jewelry, and sunglasses don’t take up much space and are worth it! I packed three swimsuits which was perfect for the different water activities and beach days.

Cosmetics & Beauty

Sometimes you think you will need everything in the world for when you travel but you will quickly realize you just need the basics! If you are in dire need of anything you can always purchase it in Europe. One thing that we found difficult to find was over-the-counter pain relief, I suggest bringing your own preferred type. For airplane travel, Europe requires liquids to be no larger than 100ml and in a clear plastic bag for all carry-ons.

Extras

A few extra items that are very handy and unique!

Resistance Bands: A great piece of gym equipment that is lightweight, takes up a small amount of space, and offers a great workout.

Reusable Water Bottle: Many cities throughout Europe have FREE drinking water spouts, bring your reusable water bottle to fill up.

Notebook/Pen: Journal throughout your trip, you will thank yourself later!

Portable USB Charger: With all of the navigation and photo opportunities your phone will die quickly, purchase a portable charger to charge your phone on the go!

Carabiners: These save tons of space! Carabine bulky items like shoes and water bottles to your backpack.

Pad Locks: A cheap solution to a sense of security. If you are staying in hostels, you will want these. We brought ours to save on additional fees.
