Exploring Hidden Villages in Lake Como
Lake Como is famous for glitzy villas and Instagram-famous towns, but if you’re craving a slice of authentic Italy, the quieter corners of the lake are where the magic happens. We found ourselves wandering through charming villages, breathing in mountain-fresh air, and soaking up the kind of views that make you pause mid-step just to snap a photo (or three).

Best Time to Visit Lake Como, Italy
Spring and early fall are absolute gold. In the spring, flowers bloom along the lake’s edge, and the air is crisp and refreshing—ideal for hiking and wandering. Early fall, on the other hand, brings golden foliage, fewer tourists, and that cozy, “I belong here” vibe that makes Lake Como feel like your personal secret.
Where to Stay on Lake Como
If you want to wake up to serene lake views without fighting the crowds stay near the town of Tremezzo. We chose a budget friendly option because we knew we would be out exploring most of the time so we stayed at Hotel Riviera, a family-owned B&B right on the water. It was the kind of place where mornings start with a smile and a delicious free breakfast while the lake sparkles outside your window—absolutely perfect for a peaceful getaway.
For a mid-range option, Hotel Villa Marie is nestled just south of Tremezzo, this charming hotel offers panoramic lake views, a tranquil garden, and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s right on Lake Como and provides easy access to local attractions
If you’re looking to go all out, Grand Hotel Tremezzo is the ultimate 5-star experience. With luxurious rooms, a private lakeside beach, infinity pools, and spectacular views of the lake and mountains, it’s a dream for anyone wanting to indulge in Lake Como elegance. Whether you’re sipping cocktails on the terrace or relaxing in the spa, this hotel takes the lake experience to the next level.

Top Restaurants & Drinks in Lake Como
Eating in Lake Como doesn’t have to be crowded or touristy—our favorite meals were full of flavor and lakeside charm. Ristorante Belle Ile in Griante served fresh, beautifully presented Italian dishes with incredible lake views—perfect for a sunset dinner. For a casual bite or sweet treat, Bar Gelateria Panineria “Crema & Cioccolato” was our go-to spot for gelato, paninis, and espresso in a cozy, local atmosphere. We also loved Risto Bar Company Vecchia Maiolica, where hearty meals, local wines, and welcoming service made it feel like dining with friends. This restaurant is ran by the same owner of our charming B&B.
When it comes to drinks with a view, Vittoria 1894 – Cocktail Bar & Bistrot is the place to be. Sipping creative cocktails or your favorite Italian wines right on the water as the sun sets over the lake is an absolute must—this spot captures the magic of Lake Como perfectly.

Things to Do in Lake Como
Lake Como is the kind of place where every day can be its own adventure. Start your mornings with a refreshing run along the lakefront or a dip in the water to wake up with stunning views. Spend time wandering the charming town of Tremezzo, exploring its streets, shops, and cafes, or take one of the many scenic hiking trails nearby for breathtaking lake and mountain vistas.

Hike Recommendation Greenway del Lago
- Distance: ~10 km (can be done in segments)
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Highlights: This scenic trail winds through small villages like Lenno, Griante, and Tremezzo, offering sweeping lake views, historic villas, terraced gardens, and peaceful forested stretches. You’ll pass by charming streets, old churches, and panoramic viewpoints—perfect for photos.
- Why it’s great: It’s not too strenuous, so you can combine it with a morning run, a visit to local cafes, or a stop at a nearby beach. You also get that “hidden gem” feel since it’s less touristy than the main lakeside promenades.
Pro Tip: Start in Tremezzo and walk toward Lenno in the morning, then stop for lunch or a coffee before looping back. Wear good walking shoes and bring water—some parts are shaded, others are exposed.
Day Trip to Bellagio
A day trip by ferry to Bellagio is a must—stroll along the cobbled streets, visit the famous I Giardini di Villa Melzi, and wander the iconic Famous Street of Bellagio for shopping, photo ops, and local vibes. Back in Tremezzo, renting a boat for a day lets you cruise the lake at your own pace, discover hidden coves, and soak in views of the surrounding mountains from the water. Whether you’re walking, hiking, running, or boating, Lake Como’s mix of adventure and relaxation makes it impossible not to fall in love.
