The Chow Kit: An Elegant Minimalist’s Dream Hotel

The Chow Kit

The Chow Kit Hotel Review

Location

The Chow Kit is located in the beautiful modern city of Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur (KL) is the capital city of Malaysia and has a ton to offer! The Chow Kit is in the perfect location to experience old Kuala Lumpur and immerse yourself in the bustling markets, unique cafes, and lively night life. It is conveniently located next to the the light rail for ease of travel to other touristic attractions.

The Concept & Décor

The Chow Kit boutique hotel is part of the special Ormond Group. This Southeast Asia based group prides themselves on the true meaning of Asian hospitality. The Chow Kit is one of three brands Ormond Group owns and has become quite famous, with its features in the New York Times, Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, and many more notable media sites. This does not come to a surprise with the amount of attention to detail, history, and simple elegance The Chow Kit brings.

This boutique hotel breathes minimal elegance with a touch of retro. It is truly a work of art, with their mix of hand selected designers, artists, and craftsmen. Wondering who hand made the plate you are eating on or who chose the textile for that rug you fell in love with? Each small detail was made by a creative individual that The Chow Kit chose for their unique artistic abilities.

The History

Chow Kit neighborhood may not be the first thing on a travelers bucket list when visiting Kuala Lumpur. Its rough edges was once the go to place for night life with gambling, a red light district, and shopping. Loke Chow Kit owned some of these gambling dens and was the founder of Chow Kit & Co, a well known general store and first local owned department store in the area. Loke was a true innovator and has left a great legacy. The Chow Kit hotel gets its name from this 20th century leader. You can book a historic walking tour at the hotel to go even more in-depth.

“Editing out what is unnecessary and keeping the essentials, is simplified luxury.”

The Rooms

One of the most unique and elegant rooms I have ever stayed in, the Chow Kit has hit the nail on the head with their “luxury simplified” design. The dark green walls compliment the warm tones of the art deco fixtures. While this was a minimal room with a few pieces of furniture, it sang elegance and comfort. The gold historic light switches really sold the space and gave it that extra touch of charm. The rooms are free of clutter with just the essentials for amenities, paying oath to the “luxury simplified” design plan.

Dining

The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar is a large yet cozy space serving delicious conversational bites. The space was designed to be open and allow for people to mingle and become friends. Their dim lighting and small table lamps set a roaring 20s speakeasy vibe that I absolutely loved. They have designed their menu from passed down Malay recipes that bring people together. It is a great place to enjoy authentic bites, a craft cocktail, and a lasting conversation with a friend, life partner, or even stranger.
